*My rule is this: Small backpack as carryon or I'm carrying too much stuff.
*Yes, take a sleeping bag, but make it as small and light as you can. No tent (people use the ATMs and it's quite common for people to sleep in them)
*Clothing minimum - two of each thing is often enough. hand wash things Use modern lightweight clothing (things that dry fast!) that can be layered when necessary.
*Invest in good thermal underwear - long johns and undershirt - they pack down tiny and make a huge difference to your comfort level when you find yourself somewhere cold.
*(Instead of a big jacket), take a lightweight windproof & waterproof with other layers of clothes - makes a huge difference to your comfort level.
*No books- too heavy 2nd hand bookstore & trade them
If you find a book you love, post it home or note ISBN and get it at half.com when home
* wrapped inside plastic bags, in case you get caught out in the rain and your pack gets wet.
* couple of big trash bags and plenty ziplock (sandwich) bags
*Backpack -small enough as carry on, airline can't lose it, and fly in Europe or Asia on budget airlines.

It's an historical moment, a black man is a president (before a woman becomes a president - ther is a parallel there with woman having the right to vote after black men could.)
I hope he is going to inject youth and positivity into this country that has lived on the laurels of the past. As a nation, we need to strive to regain our luster and glory of being a great nation, respected for our indivduality, ingenuity and greatness.
This past summer (June, 2008 to be precise), I told my Brother Kang in Singapore after a sumptious dinner that Obama is going to be President. I called it then, should have "intrade" it for I would have been $3,000 richer on 100 shares.
Now, it's time to move forward for there is much ahead of us. Jim Rogers, Warren Buffet or Mitt Romney is to be sought for financial revamping, to reinforce our fiancial bases.
In 4 years, would Mitt Romney give the 2012 a election shot?

*Wishful thinking" Lhasa, Tibet (China government imposed stringent travel rules: 7-day Tibet permit wait {Xian hostel had a 2 day wait I later found out] , min. 3 in party for a mandatory tour [due to March 10 2008 Tibet uprising.])
8/3 Flight to Chengdu @ 80% discount (rare, perhaps due to Olympics); C to Llasha (defeated, Tibet permit requires 7 days and other stringent rules); Aug 7-10 Yangtze Cruise (Chongqing to Yichang), train Wuhan/ 8/11 fly W to Xian, then return 4/13 to Beijing.
*Jul 30 & 31; Beijing; 8/1 British iluka interview (but can't synchronize all activities, and USA flight, mid Sept to USA)- no go, go home to USA
*Jul 28,29 Chengde Y20 miserable& hot 3rd class seats (Mongolian/ Tibetan show canceled last minute, to see it, needs to stay 29) 1:30pm A/C train Y42 Chengde-PEK
